The South Path

Tumakohua, the Shark Sanctuary

Fakarava’s South Pass, also known as Tumakohua, is a legendary spot for divers and nature lovers. Narrower than the North Pass, it concentrates exceptional biodiversity in a confined space. Its preserved environment, at the end of the world, makes it a true marine sanctuary. This is where you find the famous “shark wall,” a unique natural spectacle where hundreds of grey reef sharks gather, offering a breathtaking scene. Far from any commotion, this pass is an invitation to wonder and to reconnect with wild, untouched nature.

An Underwater Garden of Eden

Beyond the sharks, Fakarava’s South Pass is an underwater Garden of Eden. The currents, which change with the tides, allow for a drift dive over spectacular coral formations, including the famous “coral roses” that carpet the seafloor. The wildlife is incredibly rich: manta rays, leopard rays, Napoleon wrasse, schools of jacks, barracudas, groupers… it’s a never-ending ballet of dazzlingly colorful fish. The South Pass is the perfect place for snorkeling and diving, offering an unforgettable experience where every moment spent underwater is a meeting with the majesty of life.
